Friday Finds 5 -- Antique Carved Turtle

TURTLE

Turtle was purchased outside Chicago in the late 1980s. He belonged to the antique dealer's great grandfather, a missionary in Africa and was a gift of appreciation from his congregation. Then, in the 1990s, when I was refining and simplifying again, I decided to donate turtle to a consignment shop. After dropping him off, I knew I had made a mistake. I could not stop thinking about him...I could not sleep. So, the next day I rushed to the shop. Turtle was gone.

I continued to shop at that store--one of my favorite haunts. Six months later I arrived and nearly fell over. There, on a shelf, sat turtle. I couldn't believe my eyes! My heart was pounding as I handed over the money to buy turtle again.

It has been said that "a gift twice given is twice as good." If this is true, then a turtle twice purchased is outstanding!

Friday Finds 3--Happy First Day of Spring

Yesterday we purchased some pots. My orchid is three years old and has sprouted a baby. Its roots are crawling outside the pot's parameters searching for new soil. I am thrilled because orchids are supposed to be difficult to grow and care for, yet mine has flourished. What I decided to do during its dormant phase was to let it go--let the plant do its thing. Pretend it is growing in a jungle. And...look what happened.

Friday Finds 2 -- A Favorite

I love hawks, This signed hawk was carved by S. Hatton and dated 1973. Research has not uncovered any information about the artist, S. Hatton.

For several months, I visited the dealer every week and ask if the price was as low as possible. And...each week it was. Then, the week after Christmas back in the early 1990s, I finally said, "Okay what is your best price?" I couldn't believe it...the price came down and hawk came home. Sometimes it pays to be determined, diligent and wait.

This is a perfect example of awareness and keeping one's eyes open. As we were heading out to dinner, an ice bird sat at the end of our front porch. Amazing. By the time we got home, the bird had flown away...Gone...Melted.
